Hosting a Rust server: wipes, map and plugins

  • Force wipes and your own wipes

    Facepunch forces a map wipe on the first Thursday of every month, with the game update. In between, you schedule your own wipes from the panel or run them by hand: the map by changing its seed, blueprints by deleting their file.

  • Procedural or custom map

    A procedural map is defined by its size, from 1000 to 6000, and by its seed: each seed gives a different island. A custom map, made with RustEdit or bought, loads from a direct download link to its .map file. The bigger the map, the longer the startup and the more memory climbs over the wipe.

  • The right server size

    A 3000 map with 50 players runs fine on 8 GB. A 4000+ map with 100 players and plugins: aim for 16 GB and a high-frequency CPU, Rust only uses 1 or 2 threads. When in doubt, the RAM calculator answers in 30 seconds.

  • Oxide (uMod) and plugins

    Oxide is turned on with a single panel setting and updates with Rust on every restart. Plugins install from the panel, by searching the uMod and Codefling catalogues or from a ready-made selection (Kits, NTeleportation, Backpacks), and Oxide loads them without restarting the server.

  • Community or Modded: where your server shows up

    The Official tab only lists Facepunch servers. Yours appears under Community, or under Modded as soon as Oxide is turned on: that is the tab for servers whose plugins change the game (2x gather, kits, teleport). Allow 10 to 30 minutes for a new server to show up; in the meantime, press F1 in game and type client.connect followed by its address.

  • Admin, RCON and Rust+

    You become server owner with the ownerid command and your SteamID64, typed in the panel console. RCON is open for remote admin tools such as RustAdmin or BattleMetrics. The Rust+ app uses an extra port, which you add from your service page and then enter in the panel.

Can I migrate my existing server?

How to schedule and manage automatic wipes?
Wipes can be scheduled in advance from the panel. To wipe by hand, stop the server, change the map seed in the server options, then restart: a new map is generated. To reset blueprints as well, delete their file from the file manager before restarting.
